We believe music is a gift from God that when presented in worship can open our hearts and bring us closer to Him. The participants in our music ministry are servants, who through the learning and performing of music, use their voices, instruments and hearts to bring glory to God in our worship services. Rehearsals are a time of productive preparation and camaraderie, where we strive to eliminate anything that would distract the congregation from hearing the truth in our musical offerings to God. Each person in the music ministry is a part of a close knit, caring family, whose loves reaches out beyond rehearsals and into our the larger family of our church as a whole.
The Music Ministry at THUMC offers something for all ages and talent levels to be able to praise God through music:
The chancel choir is a non-auditioned group that provides music for the 11:00 worship service THUMC. Anthems reflect the themes of the Christian year and draw from a variety of musical styles accompanied by piano and on occasion, guest instrumentalists.
Chancel Choir practices on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9:00 in the sanctuary. Rehearsals are geared to members of all levels of expertise (high school to adult) and will sharpen your music/singing skills as well as provide a great time of fellowship with choir family. In addition to leading worship in the 11:00 service, the chancel choir also performs a Christmas Cantata and other special seasonal celebrations (Good Friday, Palm Sunday and Easter). There is child care available, if requested. This group is co-directed by Scott Leaman and Lisa Leaman.
Our Praise Team consists of singers and an instrumental combo that lead worship during our 8:45 contemporary worship service and other special events (Pumpkin Patch, Easter Sunrise services). We currently have: acoustic guitar, bass, drums and piano, but are always open to the addition of other instruments! The praise team sings contemporary praise and worship music and practices on Sunday evenings from 6:00-7:30. This group is co-directed by Scott and Lisa Leaman.
The Heights Ringers
Our Advanced Handbell group is comprised of twelve high-school /adult members who play a beautiful three octave set of Malmark handbells. The rehearsals are on Sunday evenings from 5:00-6:00 in the sanctuary and teach handbell techniques, strengthen general music reading skills and provide fellowship with other ringers in a fast paced, challenging, but fun atmosphere. The Heights Ringers play for the 11:00 service monthly as well as enhance special holiday celebrations though out the year. This group is directed by Lisa Leaman.
The Children’s Choir is comprised of students in 1st through 5th grades. Practices are on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:00 as a part of our Wednesday night church family activities. The children sing once every 4-6 weeks in the 11:00 worship service during the months of September thru May and present seasonal musicals. This group is co-directed by Scott and Lisa Leaman.
The Preschool Choir meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 and is directed by Sarah Leaman.
Throughout the year, soloists are welcome to share their ministry with the 8:45 or 11:00 services. If you feel God is leading you to share a message and are interested in singing or playing in a service, solos are scheduled and arranged with Lisa Leaman.
Also in our Music Ministry
While we do not have an orchestra at THUMC, there are many opportunities to play throughout the year. Instrumentalists often accompany our adult and children’s choirs, as well as being featured solos with our handbell groups. At Christmas we assemble an orchestra to play for the cantata and at Easter, a small brass ensemble. If you are interested in playing with a group, please contact us to let us know what you play. We’ll let you know as soon as opportunities arise.
